Saltus Fidei II

The Destriers
The Destrier's Descent (left) and Destrier's Ascent (right)

James Doran-Webb’s "Saltus Fidei II" features two Destriers jumping a silver water feature. The installation symbolizes power, courage and the triumph of faith over fear. The Destrier has a rich historical legacy being primarily bred as a war horse. Although less common today, Destriers remain iconic symbols of chivalry and knighthood. The obstacle represents an ideal utopia, a preferred destination that the horses are thundering towards.

The lead horse weighs over 700kg. Its cantilevered load is held by the base of the silver jump – with an area only slightly bigger than an A4 sized sheet of paper. The jump itself is made from hundreds of beaten pieces of recycled stainless steel, welded and polished, with a central core of the same material weighing in excess of half a ton. A 1hp pump provides a continuous flow of water, recycled in a subterranean rectangular bath. An array of copper pipes from old car radiators and other scrap sources, reduce water splashes and accentuate the pounding of water.
